Mutomo
county market was established in 1960 during colonial time. It was under the
governance of the late chief Mwanduka Kisemei and ran on behalf of Kitui county
council. The age-old market has served as a trading point between residents and
traders from far.

Over time,
the market became small because of increased business activities. Demand for
more space became evident when the small traders began doing their business
along the streets of the town. This made revenue collection for the county
council difficult.
The town now
boasts of a new market. The local council (now under the new county government)
has constructed a new market. Residents attribute this achievement to the area
Member of County Assembly Representative Jackson Mwanduka. He is said to have
successfully pushed the agenda and yielded in the setting up of the facility.

The market
is divided in to two portions. The lower portion is situated along the landing strip
and will serve as livestock market while the other portion located at the midst
of the town will be used to sell general wares. It is estimated that it can
accommodate up to three hundred traders.
The new
facility is set to serve residents of Mutomo District and the new Ikutha
District hived from Mutomo.
